Home Preacher or Church in the House, Meditations

TUESDAY.

Morning.

Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,

But he shall receive an hundred-fold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

Mark x. 28, 29, 30, 31.

Evening.

But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.

But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be the servant of all.

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Mark x. 42, 43, 44, 45.

Good Words for Every Day of the Year, from Good Words, Sunday Magazine, 1860.

July 14.

"Blessed be his glorious name for ever, and let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and Amen."

—Ps. lxxii. 19.

There is a glorious day yet before us, when this prayer, which is also a prophecy, shall be accomplished, and this earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord as it has never yet been. We ask not how this shall be; we simply believe, that because the Lord has said it, He will do it to His own eternal praise and glory. The thought is to the believer a source of unspeakable joy and comfort; such comfort, as it must have been to the Jewish believer of the elder Church, to look forward to a Saviour yet to be revealed, of whom the prophets spoke, and the typical services gave promise. And thus do we look for His second coming, which will make this sin-blighted world full of His glory; rejoicing in the thought that our Saviour, who was rejected and despised among men, will in that day reign as King of kings and Lord of lords in an inconceivably glorious kingdom, where all the prophecies shall be seen and known to be true, finding their full accomplishment in ways perhaps which we little dream of. "Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent, that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot and blameless," 2 Pet. iii. 14.

"He shall reign from pole to pole

With illimitable sway;

He shall reign when as a scroll

Heaven and earth shall pass away!"

God's Minute

July Fourteenth.

"I will praise Thee,

for Thou hast heard me."

--Ps. 118: 21.

OUR dear Heavenly Father, reverently do we approach Thee, the giver of all good and perfect gifts. We give thanks to Thee for all the blessings Thou hast so graciously bestowed upon us. Thou hast kept us day by day unto this hour. We must say that goodness and mercy have followed us. We have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. For the sake of Jesus do Thou forgive all our sins. Wash us in the blood of the Lamb. Give us grace to perform every duty in life conscientiously, and in Thy fear, O Lord. May we not be slothful in business, but fervent in spirit , serving the Lord . May our lives be fully consecrated to Thy service. Help us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Give us the mind of Christ. May we crucify the old Adam with all his affections and lusts, so that the new man may daily arise within us to live before Thee in righteousness and purity.

Give us grace, dear Lord, to live such lives day by day, that when our end shall come we may be prepared to enter upon the rest that remaineth for the people of God. Grant these blessings unto us, and to all our fellow men, out of the fulness of Thine infinite love and mercy, in Christ Jesus our Lord and Saviour, and for His sake alone.  Amen.
